Sunday Selections – August 15th 2021

Hi all,

Mayfair Stroll’s win at Newmarket at a BOG 11/2 ensured a small profit on Saturday.  Today’s selections are from Deauville and Pontefract.

Deauville

2:50 – Poetic Flare – 11/4 @ Coral – One of the best if not the best 3-year-old miler in Europe. The 2,000 Guineas winner was so impressive when landing the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on good to firm ground.  Not quite at his best when a 1 ¾ lengths runner-up to Alcohol Free in the Sussex Stakes last time. It was still an excellent run by the colt, given he wasn’t totally at home on the track at Goodwood, would have preferred a stronger pace to chase and the going was soft. If he gets good ground today, he will give Palace Pier a race and can beat him.

Pontefract

4:20 – Flint Hill – 100/30 @ Bet365 or 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Showed a liking for the track when winning over C&D two starts back and followed up with arguably an even better effort when a 1 length 3rd of 14 at York last month. That was a better race and the 5-year-old goes well on good ground. Looks the one to beat here.

5:25 – Wether Fell – 5/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Well beaten on his first two starts in handicap company, both at 7f, seemed to enjoy the drop back to sprint distances when a ½ length 2nd of 8 at Carlisle last month. The Julie Camacho yard is back among the winners after a quiet spell  and the 4-year-old can go close from a decent draw in stall 5.

Cheers

Saturday Selections – August 14th 2021

Hi all,

Raatea got us back among the winners on Friday. It was just a shame that Babindi didn’t hold on at Nottingham. Still, I will take that sort of profit any day of the week.

It’s four selections day on Saturday. We normally find one winner on such days so let’s hope we can do so again

Newmarket

1:30 – Mayfair Stroll – 100/30 @Bet365 – Won on her nursery debut at Lingfield (good to firm) two starts back. Looked unlucky, when a 1 length 4th of 13, was hampered over 5f out,  at Goodwood last time. Up 2lb but will appreciate the better ground and looks progressive.

3:05 – First Folio – 3/1 @ Bet365 & Paddy Power – Made it 2-3 for the yard when quickening clear of a big field at York (good to firm) two starts back. Looked unsuited by the soft ground in the Steward Cup consolation race 14-days ago. Worth another chance back on quicker ground.

4:15 – Danni California – 9/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Improved for her handicap debut when a length 2nd of 8 over C&D 22-days ago. Might well have won but was slowly away. Up 1lb but looks capable of more improvement and win a race off her present mark.

Bath

5:10 – Mutasallem – 8/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection won a nursery at Wolverhampton last October but was disappointing on his seasonal reappearance in May. First run since and has been gelded in the meantime. Trainer Marcus Tregoning is 3-10 +8.00 with his runners in Bath 3-year-old only handicaps and 4-17 +23.23 with his runners in the past two weeks.

Friday Selections – August 13th 2021

Hi all,

A couple of tough days. The selections have been running well but just not winning.  Today’s selections are from Nottingham, Newmarket and Thirsk.

Nottingham

4:10 – Babindi – 7/4 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The 3-year-old bounced back to form when winning at Bath two weeks ago. Up 5lb for her first career success but she’s capable of further progress and the likely forecast weak pace should suit the prominent racer. Trainer William Haggas has his string in great form and is 6 winners from 10 runners 60% +5.43 8 placed 80% with his 3-year-old handicappers in the past 14-days.

Newmarket

5:35 – Raatea – 15/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Best form has come on the synthetics but he’s also effective on a sound surface on grass. Sent off just 6/1 for a big field handicap at York last month. Lost any chance he had at the start that day but was subjected to a hard race. That was the 4-year-old first run at 6f and he looks worth another try at the trip. Tends to run off the pace so the forecast strong pace is a positive.

6:53 – Princess Power – 7/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – A winner over 6f here as a 2-year-old. She’s now dropped down a winnable mark and was an eyecatching 1 ½ length 4th of 9 over C&D 12-days ago. Can’t afford to be slowly away as she was last time but if she breaks on level terms won’t be far away.

Cheers

Thursday Selections – August 12th 2021

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Beverley & Salisbury.

Beverley

4:20 – Ron O – 6/1 @ Bet365 & Paddy Power – The selection might be a seven-race maiden but he’s shown enough to think he can win a race off his present mark. Did best of those coming off the pace when a ¾ length 3rd of 9 at Thirsk 11-days ago. Get’s the first time cheekpieces today and hopefully the application of the headgear will eke out a bit of improvement in the 3-year-old.

Salisbury

3:30 – Fitzrovia – 5/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Comes into this 1m handicap in winning form having won a Bath apprentice race 8-days ago. Can race off the same mark here and is 1 win from 1 run when racing within 8-days of his last start. Looks the one they all have to beat.

5:10 – Zuraig – 5/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Won a Windsor novice in May and bounced back from two below par efforts, one here, to finish a 1 length 2nd of 7 back at Windsor last time. Remains capable of better for the inform Andrew Balding yard.

Cheers

Wednesday Selections – August 11th 2021

Hi all,

Salisbury

3:05 – Additional – 11/4 @ Bet365 – Hasn’t built on the promise of his seasonal reappearance when a 2-length 4th of 11 at Newmarket in April. Being well beaten on both starts. Those two poor runs mean the 4-year-old has dropped 5lb in the weights. Trainer Marty Meade has won with his last two runners and Osin Murphy is up for the first time this season.

Gowran Park

8:05 – Palace Rock – 10/1 @ Bet365 or 8/1 @ Coral & Paddy Power – The selection a winner over hurdles and all-weather early in the year. He returned from a 89-day break to post an encouraging effort on his flat handicap debut when a 5 ¼ length 5th off 11 at Naas 9-days ago. He was sent off the 7/2 favourite last time and ran like he would be suited by a return to 1m 4f.

Cheers

John

Monday Selections – August 9th 2021

Hi all.

Campanelle played up before the race and that was her chance gone even before the off and Bopedro finished tailed off at the Curragh running as if something was amiss.

Today’s selections are from Ayr, Windsor and Wolverhampton.

Ayr

1:50 – Glorious Rio – 7/2 @ Bet365 – Improved for the refitting of the blinkers and the drop back to 5f when winning at Newcastle 7-days ago. Has a 5lb penalty to carry for last week’s success and has to replicate that form back on turf but if he can will be tough to beat.

Windsor

8:05 – Dusk Chorus – 4/1 @ Bet365 or 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Posted a personal best when winning at Lingfield (good to soft) 26-days ago. On the evidence of that run, she should be well suited by today’s extra 1 ½ f. Has a 3lb rise in weights to contend with here but looks capable of defying it.

Wolverhampton

2:10 – Maketh Believeth – 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – A neck 2nd of 11 over C&D last time. That was a career best on RPR’s from the 3-year-old and despite a 3lb rise in the weights he should remain competitive and go close.

Cheers

Sunday Selections – August 8th 2021

Hi all,

We came through a tricky Saturday with two winners and a close-up second. Today’s selections are from Deauville and the Curragh.

Deauville

2:50 – Campanelle – 5/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Won the Commonwealth Cup in the steward’s room at Royal Ascot. Lightly raced she won the Group 1 Prix Morny (6f) here last August. Goes well on soft ground and shouldn’t have an issue with today’s extra half furlong.

Curragh

3:05 – Romantic Proposal – 9/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection finished 2 ¾ length behind Gustavus Weston over 5f last time. Prior to that she had won a Listed race over C&D (good). The return to 6f is a plus and she does get 5lb from Gustavus Weston which should help her get closer today.

4:40 – Bopedro – 5/1 @ Bet365 – Wins more than his fair share of races. A previous C&D winner, he finished an excellent 2 length 3rd of 17 to Sirjack Thomas over C&D last time. A hold up horse he needs luck in the run but should be there or thereabouts if he gets it.

Cheers

John

Saturday Selections – August 7th 2021

Hi all,

Gweedore ran well to finish third yesterday but wasn’t well placed on the inner. Not the easiest day but today’s selections are from Newmarket, Haydock & Cork.

Newmarket

3:25 – Uncs – 9/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection made it 2 wins from 3 starts when winning at Redcar on good to firm ground 20-days ago. Looked a hard ride that day so its no surprise to see the first time cheekpieces have been applied today. If the headgear has the desired effect, it can eke out the improvement required to win this nursery handicap.

Haydock

3:00 – Edgewood – 17/2 @ Bet365 – Twice a winner at Hamilton in 2020 on rain softened ground.  Hasn’t run well on either start this season but has had wind surgery since finishing down the field at Ascot 28-days ago. Fair chance he can stay 7f and trainer Julie Camacho’s horses seem to be running into winning form.

Cork

3:50 – Karlsberg – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Seemed to improve for her handicap debut when 3rd of 30 over an extended 6f at the Curragh last time. Doing her best work at the finish the extra ½ furlong looks a positive and she’s capable of going close off 3lb higher.

4:55 – Le Petite Coco – 7/2 @ Bet365 or 100/30 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Improved for the step up to 1m 3f when winning at Killarney last month. A winner on soft ground earlier in the season no issues with an easy surface for her and she looks capable of making a winning step up into pattern company.

Cheers

Friday Selections – August 6th 2021

Hi all,

Two winners and a close-up third was a good haul from Thursday’s action. Today’s tricky looking cards are complicated by the potential for some rain at Musselburgh and a little of the wet stuff at Brighton this afternoon. The upshot is that I’m left with the just the one selection.

Musselburgh

4:20 – Gweedore – 11/2 @ Bet365 or 5/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection showed a good attitude at the finish to hold on at Ayr 32-days ago. Twice a C&D winner last season. He’s been nudged up 2lb for his last win and is in a slightly better race but the forecast rain is a positive.

Cheers

John
