Saturday Selections – October 23rd 2021

Hi all,

Another close-up second at Doncaster but the service can’t get out of the slump. Hopefully things will turn around today. Saturday’s selections are from Doncaster, Newbury and the Curragh.

Doncaster

2:05 – Ibiza Rocks – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Is one of the least exposed runners in the field. Put firmly in his place by handicap good thing Sunray Major at Ascot last time. He seemed to handle good to soft well enough at Ascot so today’s softer could also suit. Only 1lb higher than at Ascot and looks the one to beat.

Newbury

4:50 – One Journey – 4/1 – Gen – I like the claims of One Journey in this 1m 2f handicap. The filly won here over a mile on her racecourse debut 12 months ago. She struggled in Listed company on here first two starts this season but put in a personal best when a 5-length 6th of 18 at York two weeks ago. That performance came off a 4-month absence and given her lightly raced profile she can do better.

5:10 – French Claim – 13/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Plenty of promising juveniles in this Group 3 contest. The selection overcame a wide draw to win at Listowel on his racecourse debut last month. The colt showed a nice change of gear to lead 1f out at meeting where there had been a bias towards front runners.  Needs to take another step forward but looks capable of doing so.

Cheers

Friday Selections – October 22nd 2021

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Cheltenham, Doncaster, and Dundalk.

Cheltenham

3:40 – Back On The Lash – 9/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection made it 3-3 under today’s jockey Sean Bowen when making all to beat three rivals at Uttoxeter 89-days ago. Good ground ideal and the break shouldn’t be a problem as the 7-year-old is 4-8, 5 places when racing 60+days since his last run. There’s a good chance he can get an uncontested lead here.

Doncaster

4:55 – Aone Ally – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The lightly raced 3-year-old put in a career best when a head 3rd of 9 at Ayr 15-days ago. That performance was produced on soft ground and there should be more to come from the selection stepped up to 1m 2f.

Dundalk

7:15 – Urban Beat – 7/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Won this race 12 months ago and this season won a Curragh handicap three starts back. Has remained in decent form on two subsequent starts in Listed company. Looks capable of big run on his bid for back-to-back wins in the race.

Cheers

Thursday Selections – October 21st 2021

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Ludlow, Carlisle, and Wolverhampton.

Ludlow

3:15 – Gouet Des Bruyeres – 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Made it 2-9 over fences when winning over an extended 2m at Worcester 23-days ago. The 5-year-old looks capable of more progress and there’s a good chance on pedigree that he will stay 2m 4f on an easy track like Ludlow.

Carlisle

4:50 – On Springs – 5/1 @ Bet365 & Coral – Ran well switched on his handicap hurdle debut when a ¾ length 4th of 9 at Hereford when last seen in action back in March. First time cheekpieces are applied today and he shouldn’t be far away.

Wolverhampton

8:00 – Global Romance – 5/1 @ Coral – Looked the sort to do well in nurseries when 3rd of 6 at Nottingham back in June. Handicap debut off 68 looks workable and the booking of Silvestre De Sousa is a plus.

Cheers

Wednesday Selections – October 20th 2021

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Navan.

Navan

2:55 – Tide Of Time – 4/1 – Gen – A winner at Bellewstown two starts back. The 7-year-old showed he remained in form when a ¾ length 2nd of 11 here last time. A four-time winner at Navan and can go well again.

3:30 – Zozimus – 4/1 – Gen – The selection bounced back from a couple of poor performances to post a personal best when a 3 ¼ length 4th of 26 in Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket last time. The three that finished ahead of him in Cambridgeshire were all drawn high so you can arguably mark up his performance a bit.

Tuesday Selections – October 19th 2021

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Yarmouth & Gowran Park.

Yarmouth

4:50 – Silver Bubble – 7/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Put in a decent effort returned to turf last time. The filly was going well but didn’t get a clear run 2f when ¾-length third of 8 at Brighton 14-days ago.  With a better passage she could well have won. Off the same mark here and goes well on easy ground.

Gowran Park

4:40 – Sunniyra – 13/2 @ Bet365 & Ladbrokes – A career best effort on RPR’s when a 1 length 3rd of 18 at the Curragh 5-days ago. That was the filly’s first start in a handicap and she can race off the same mark.  Provided she can back up that performance off a relatively quick turnaround then she should go well over today’s 2f longer trip.

Monday Selection – October 18th 2021

Hi all.

Sorry for the lateness of today’s post. Today’s selection is from Pontefract.

Pontefract

3:30 – Thunderclap – 9/2 – Gen – The selection showed he handled soft ground when doing his best work at the finish when a 2 ½ length 3rd of 13 here 14-days ago. That performance came over a mile and 3-year-old finished his race off like he was another try over 1m 2f.

Cheers

Saturday Selections – October 16th 2021

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Ascot, Ffos Las and Market Rasen.

Ascot

2:00 – Art Power – 9/2 – Gen – A previous C&D winner. He also finished a length 4th of 16 in this race 12 months ago. And, a 1 ¾ length 3rd of 12 in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot. Add in his 4th placed effort in the July Cup and his 1 ¾ length 5th of 11th in the Haydock Sprint Cup and you have a horse who is just below Group 1 level. That said he may not need to be a Group 1 horse to win this year’s renewal. The 4-year-old easily beat Twilight Spinner in a Group 3 at the Curragh 3 weeks ago and looks the one to beat if stall 20 isn’t an inconvenience.

Ffos Las

4:35 – Dobryn – 7/1 @ Bet365 – The selection improved with each of his three starts over hurdles and made a winning handicap hurdle debut at Ludlow in March. This is a much better race but there is plenty to like about the 5-year-old’s profile and he can go well.

Market Rasen

3:20 – Senior Citizen – 5/1 – Gen – A winner first up last season. The 8-year-old is much respected on his close-up 4th of 14 at Newbury in March and 3rd of 26 in the Topham Trophy at Aintree. There is a handicap chase in him off his present mark and goes well on a sound surface.

Cheers

Thursday Selections – October 14th 2021

Hi all,

The flat jockey’s title race is hotting up with Osin Murphy now just two ahead of rival William Buick and the pair have plenty of rides at this evening’s meeting at Chelmsford.

Today’s selections are from Chelmsford.

Chelmsford

7:00 – Rikanah – 6/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – A winner of her first two starts on the all-weather. The filly returned to the synthetics after a low-key performance on grass when 3¾ lengths 5th of 9 at Kempton 64-days ago. Not seen to best effect as she raced very wide in the straight that day. Wide draw not a positive but the strong pace will suit.

8:00 – Dubai Icon – 6/1 @ Bet365 – Is a useful enough handicapper in the right grade. The top-weight is a previous C&D winner and wasn’t disgraced when 7th of 16 in a Group 3 (dirt) at Meydan when last seen in action in March. If ready to roll after a 222-day layoff he can Osin Murphy another winner in his pursuit in the jockey’s title.

8:30 – Zefferino – 7/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Both the 7-year-old’s all-weather wins have come over C&D, including this race in 2019. He shaped like he can soon take advantage of dropping mark when a 3 ¼ length 2nd of 10 at Bath 17-days ago. Given he was very slowly away that day he did very well to finish as close as he did at the finish.

Cheers

Wednesday Selections – October 13th 2021

Hi all,

The cold is still with me but I’m feeling much better this morning. Today’s selections are from Wetherby and Kempton.

Wetherby

3:23 – Road Warrior – 7/2 – Gen – Completed the hat trick when winning at Sedgefield in April. Up 8lb and in a better race here but the 7-year-old could be capable of better and seems likely to get an uncontested lead.

Kempton

6:30 – Carbon – 4/1 – Gen – Has improved with each of his four starts and got off the mark last time when making all to win at Leicester 23-days ago. He should stay a mile and a mark of 81 looks workable for his nursery debut.

Cheers

John
