Sunday Selections – April 24th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Wetherby and Bath.

Wetherby

4:40 – The Armed Man – 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Is on a losing run that goes back to August 2020 but that also means the 9-year-old has dropped down the handicap and is now 10lb below his last winning mark. Likely just needed the run when a 3 ½ length 3rd of 15 at Thirsk 15-days ago. All career wins at 6f but today’s 5 ½ f intermediate trip could be ideal.

5:45 – Mostly Cloudy – 5/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection was upped in distance to 1m 2f on his first start for 5 months Made steady headway from the rear that day, to finish a never nearer 6 ¾ length 4th of 11 at Nottingham (1m 2f) 8-days ago. Today’s further step up in distance could elicit more improvement the 3-year-old who is bred for middle distances.

Bath

4:20 – My Boy Charles – 17/2 @ Bet365 – Trainer Adrian Wintle runs two Blue Hero and My Boy Charles and I fancy the bigger priced of the pair who makes his seasonal reappearance. The selection’s sole career win came here over 1m 2f last August and he maybe better over that distance but he also went close over C&D on his seasonal return last May.

Cheers

John

Saturday Selections – April 23rd 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Sandown, Haydock, and Navan.

Sandown

5:15 – Press Your Luck – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection is 8lb higher than when winning a competitive handicap hurdle at Kempton last month. However, the 7-year-old is going the right way and must have a good chance of landing the hat trick for the very much inform Chris Gordon stable.

Haydock

3:45 – Kingmania – 11/4 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Trainer Chris Wall has started the new turf season in good form 2 winners from 3 runners in the past 14-days. The selection made it 3-3 over 7f when winning at Doncaster in June before putting in a near personal effort on RPR’s when a 1 ½ length 4th of 11 at Newmarket. Best efforts have come on good to firm ground and she’s capable of better as 4-year-old.

Navan

4:46 – Kyprios – 9/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Seemed to enjoy the sound surface when making a winning seasonal reappearance at Cork 12 months ago. The 4-year-old hasn’t been seen since disappointing in the Lingfield Derby Trial last May. A full brother to Search for A Song & Falcon Eight he has the potential to improve over staying trips this season.

Cheers

Friday Selections – April 22nd 2022

Hi all,

We’ve been hitting the crossbar of late with another two second placed efforts yesterday. Today’s four selections run at Sandown and Doncaster.

Sandown

4:40 – Monet’s Sunrise – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Likely needed his first run for 7 months when a 1¼ length 2nd of 6 at Lingfield 16-days ago. The selection should be suited by the step up to 1m 2f and makes his handicap debut off what looks a workable mark.

Doncaster

1:00 – Frog And Toad – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection shaped well enough on his first start for 228-days and first run since a wind-op when a 1 ¼ length 2nd of 14 at Redcar 18-days ago.  Better expected with that run under his belt. He should be able to win a race off his present mark.

1:40 – Tamaska – 9/2 @ Bet365 – A four-time winner on turf last season, including a win over C&D in August off just 2lb lower. All last year’s successes came on quick ground so underfoot conditions will suit the 4-year-old and if he’s ready to roll after 149-day break won’t be far away.

5:05 – Madame Ambassador – 15/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The filly’s sole success from five juvenile starts came in Nottingham nursery (good) last August. She remained in form on her final two starts last season going close at Salisbury and Bath, doing her best work at the finish last time. On breeding she should do better as a 3-year-old and over today’s 1m 2f trip.

Cheers

John

Thursday Selections – April 21st 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Perth, Beverley, and Chelmsford.

Perth

3:50 – Arthur’s Seat – 3/1 @ Paddy Power – A maiden after five starts over hurdles but he’s improved on his last two starts finishing runner-up at Ayr before finishing a 3-length 3rd of 13 at Newbury 20-days ago. Seemed to stay the 3m well enough last time and is ground versatile.

Beverley

4:10 – Urban War – 5/1 @ Bet365 – Shaped like the run was needed when a never nearer 12 length 8th of 10 on his seasonal reappearance at Nottingham and didn’t go off unfancied that day, returned 9/2. A course winner as a juvenile he 4-year-old also finished a neck 2nd of 10 here last summer. Kevin Stott 2-2 on the selection is back in the saddle.

Chelmsford

6:07 – Secret Moment – 4/1 @ Bet365 – The selection improved for the fitting of the visor finishing a close-up 2nd of 10 at Wolverhampton before going one place better at the same venue in October. The 5-year-old drops back to 6f for the first time in his career and remains of interest on his seasonal return.

Wednesday Selections – April 20th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Perth and Salisbury.

Perth

2:25 – Shantou Lucky – 7/2 – Gen – Got off the mark at the second attempt over fences when winning a Clonmel novice chase (soft) last month. He jumped soundly that day and is at the right end of the handicap for his handicap chase debut, if he can translate his form to today’s better ground.

Salisbury

7:10 – Alpine Stroll – 7/2 @ Bet365 & Paddy Power – There’s a good chance that the selection will get an uncontested lead with Silvestre De Sousa has been booked for the ride. The 4-year-old remains maiden after 13 starts but has several pieces of form, including two placed efforts over C&D that make him look nicely treated here.

7:40 – Sulochana – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection won this race 12 months ago on his seasonal reappearance (good to firm ground) and followed up at Nottingham (soft). The 5-year-old remains 4lb above his last win but this prominent racer should be better positioned than Flying Standard who finished one place in front of him over C&D last August.

Cheers

John

Tuesday Selections – April 19th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Epsom.

Epsom

2:20 – Mighty Ulysses – 5/2 @ Bet365 – Won a Yarmouth maiden on his sole juvenile start. He looked a nice 3-year-old prospect when winning at Yarmouth and should be suited by the step up to 1m 2f. The Gosden yard won this race four times between 2015 & 2018 so they know what type of horse is required to win the race. The colt holds Dante & Derby entries.

2:55 – Achelois – 11/4 @ Bet365 & Paddy Power – Steadily progressive last season winning three times and ended her campaign with a 1 ¾ length 4th of 15 in a Fillies & Mares Listed race at Doncaster. Doesn’t have the best of draws in stall 7 but trainer Andrew Balding has saddled the winner of the race twice since 2015. The forecast decent pace will also suit the filly who could do better as a 4-year-old.

3:30 – Going Gone – 13/2 @ Bet365 – Lightly raced for his age, just the seven career starts. The 4-year-old was an improver last autumn winning his last two starts on turf over C&D and Newmarket. Looks the sort who could do better as a 4-year-old. If he’s ready to roll after a 172-day absence, won’t be far away.

Cheers

John

Monday Selections – April 18th 2022

Hi all

Today’s selections are from Fairyhouse. Kempton and Plumpton.

Fairyhouse

3:50 – Flame Bearer – 5/1 @ Bet365 – I can’t desert Flame Bearer who did us a good turn when winning here over 2m last time. An improving novice hurdler. He steps into open company for the first time here. He showed a good attitude to prevail last time despite not getting the best of rides. The step up to 2m 4f should suit as will the forecast strong pace.

4:20 – Blackbow – 9/4 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Gets a handy 8lb from favourite & stablemate Janidil. There’s also a good chance that the 9-year-old will get an uncontested lead and if he does, he will be hard to peg back here.

Kempton

4:40 – Fantasy Believer – 10/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – All three of the selections career wins have come over C&D and given how slowly away was he did well to get within 1¼ lengths of the winner when a 4th of 9 over C&D 19-days ago. On a good mark but does needs to break on level terms and have a decent early pace to chase.

Plumpton

4:02 – Mercian Prince – 10/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Plenty in the selections favour today, despite being the outsider of five. He’s 1-1 over C&D, made all to win this race in 2019. He’s a six-time winner on good ground. He won off this mark at Kempton in October and although he disappointed on his next two starts, he’s been given a 147-day break and goes well fresh.

Cheers

John

Sunday Selections – April 17th 2022

Hi all,

A case of close but not close enough with yesterday’s three selections. Hopefully today can provide us with a success. Today’s selections are from Newbury & Plumpton.

Newbury

5:05 – Global Prospector – 11/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection improved for a return to turf last season winning at Yarmouth & Bath before going very close to landing the four-timer when ½ length 2nd of 13 at Sandown in August. Up 3lb but will be tough to beat if ready roll after a 238-day absence.

5:40 – Honky Tonk Man – 7/1 @ Bet365 & Paddy Power – Honky Tonk Man is the pic in this 7f 3-year-old only handicap. Too green to do himself justice when last of six on racecourse debut here last May. He was given time to develop wasn’t seen out until the end of October when winning on the all-weather at Lingfield and the following up a month later at Newcastle. He’s bred to be better than a 88 rated horse and looked capable of better at Newcastle.

Plumpton

4:35 – Mark Of Gold – 5/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection appreciated the return to better ground when just prevailing in a driving finish to win a Newbury handicap hurdle 16-days ago. There was plenty to like about the 5-year-old’s attitude at the finish that day. He’s been raised 4lb for that success but his form figures over C&D are 211 and he looks set for another big run.

Cheers

John

Saturday Selections – April 16th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Newbury and Haydock.

Newbury

1:50 – Stowell – 13/2 @ Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook – Looked a useful stayer in the making when coming from behind to finish a 2 ¾ length 3rd of 13 to Kemari in last season’s Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. He ran poorly when last of 5 to Yibir in a Group 3 at Newmarket the following month and hasn’t been seen since. Lightly raced for his age, just the four career starts, the 4-year-old remains with the potential to do better this season.

2:25 – Jumbly – 7/2 @ Bet365 & Coral – The filly comfortably won the Listed Radley Stakes over C&D on her final juvenile start. The ground was soft last time but if she doesn’t need that sort of ground, she looks well worth her place back in Pattern company and can go close.

Haydock

3:19 – First Impression – 11/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection jumped well and improved to win a Wetherby handicap hurdle (good to soft) in good style back in November. Has remained in form over hurdles since finishing third (beaten 8 ½ lengths) to Tommy’s Oscar at Musselburgh and runner-up to Mick Maestro at Catterick. Fitness assured after a run on the flat at Pontefract 11-days ago and the 5-year-old’s form figures are 121 when returning within 15-days of his last start.

Cheers

John

Friday Selections – April 15th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Lingfield and Chelmsford.

Lingfield

4:00 – Totally Charming – 5/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The 4-year-old, a winner for his previous yard at Wolverhampton last July, made a winning start for new trainer George Boughey at Kempton in January. Has remained in good form on both subsequent starts including when a ½ length 3rd of 10 here (1m 2f) last time. An 83-day layoff shouldn’t be an issue, as he won off a longer break in January. He’s only 1lb higher than last time and looks sure to run well again.

Chelmsford

2:45 – Hello Zabeel – 7/2 @ Bet365 & Ladbrokes – The selection got off the mark at the fifth attempt when winning a Carlisle maiden (7f). The son of Frankel showed he was fully effective over today’s distance at Carlisle. The 4-year-old is lightly raced, has been gelded over the winter and looks interesting on seasonal return/all-weather debut.

3:55 – Inigo Jones – 7/2 @ Bet365 – Inigo Jones won a C&D maiden 12 months ago. The selection didn’t really build on that success in handicap company on his last two starts as a 3-year-old, too keen on his handicap debut although there was more encouragement from his 5-length 3rd of 11 at Sandown in August. He’s been gelded since and if the procedure has had the desired effect then he can exploit his present mark of 94.

Cheers

John
