Tuesday Selections – September 27th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s sole selection is from Cork.

Cork

4:20 – Giladah – 7/2 – Gen – Is more progressive than most and should give a good account of herself from just 3lb higher than when winning at Leopardstown last month. The application of the first time hood (retained) allowed her to settle better last time and if she isn’t a Leopardstown (1m 1f) specialist, both career wins have come over that C&D, should be on the premises once more.

Cheers

Monday Selections – September 26th 2022

Hi all,

It looked mid-month like the service was sailing serenely towards a nice profit. Well it’s all gone Pete Tong over the last week or so.

Today’s selections are from Ffos Las, Hamilton and Roscommon.

Ffos Las

4:20 – Bibulous – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Has been shaping well of late a 2-length 2nd of 9 over C&D two starts back had been a career best on RPR’s. Shaped like she was still in form when a 4 ¾ length 6th of 11 at Goodwood last time. He was slow away that day and couldn’t get competitive. Taken to return to winning ways here.

Hamilton

3:23 – Marhaba The Champ – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Looked a very unlucky horse when a length 2nd of 6 at Ripon last time. He was carried markedly left entering straight and ended up racing down the stands rail. He makes his handicap debut off what looks a decent mark enough mark of 84. Soft ground would be an unknown for the 3-year-old but if he handles it, he won’t be far away.

Roscommon

3:35 – Yenillik – 8/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – A winner of today’s distance (3m) at Wexford in the spring. The 6-year-old was let down by his jumping at Bellewstown on his next start over hurdles but was back on track last time when a 3 length 3rd of 16 at Navan 9-days ago. A return to this sort of trip will suit and he’s lightly raced over hurdles to think he can do a bit better.

Cheers

Sunday Selections – September 25th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Epsom and Yarmouth.

Epsom

2:50 – Palavecino – 6/1 @ Bet365 – Jockey didn’t the get fractions right when the selection finished a 5 ½ length 8th of 13 to Marching Army at Newbury last time. Today’s likely weak pace should allow him to get an uncontested lead out in front and if he does, he can take advantage of what looks a winnable mark.

Yarmouth

4:09 – Thefastnthecurious – 8/1 @ Bet365 – Likely favourite Mustazeed will be tough to beat if starting n level terms with the rest of the field. However, a chance is taken with the filly Thefastnthecurious here.  The 4-year-old hasn’t been seen since for 388-days but she’s respected on her handicap debut 1 ¼ length 2nd of 14 to Yorkshire Lady at Sandown last August. Lightly raced and if she’s ready to roll after her absence looks on a workable mark.

Cheers

John

Saturday Selections – September 24th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Chester, Haydock, and Newmarket.

Chester

2:50 – Celtic Champion – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Improved to get off the mark at the third attempt when winning at Salisbury last month. Looks on a workable mark for his nursery debut and is taken to score here.

3:25 – Call My Bluff – 7/1 @ Bet365 – A winner here last season over 2m and was a good 1 ¾ length 3rd of 11 in the Chester Vase over C&D in May. Bounced back from a poor run at Galway when a staying on 1 ½ length 3rd of 10 to Rajinsky at Newmarket last Saturday. There shouldn’t be an issue with the quick turnaround as he’s 1-1 when racing within 7-days of his last start. Fresher than most coming into the autumn having had just four starts and an even gallop should see him go close.

Haydock

4:25 – Drafted – 7/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – An eyecatcher on his York racecourse debut once again went into the notebook when a ½ length 3rd of 6 on nursery debut over C&D 23-days ago. He was doing his best work at the finish that day and provided they go a decent gallop he’s capable of winning off a mark of 68.

Newmarket

5:25 – Alrehb – 6/1 @ Bet365 – A three time winner on the all-weather the 5-year-old has yet to score on for starts on turf, but he’s run a couple of good races that show he’s capable of winning on grass. Runner-up on his last two starts was only beaten a neck when 2nd of 14 at Doncaster two starts back and was beaten the same distance when 2nd of 12 at Newcastle last time. Has bee nudged up the weights for those two close-up efforts but can win again when all the cards fall right.

Cheers

Friday Selections – September 23rd 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Haydock and Dundalk

Haydock

2:05 – Delorean – 9/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Looked progressive when winning over C&D on handicap debut 48-days ago. Yet to race with soft in the going description but seemed to handle heavy on his 2-year-old racecourse debut last Autumn. Up 4lb for his latest win but there should be more to come from him.

2:40 – Speycaster – 100/30 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Shaped better than his 4 ½ lengths 4th of 14 over C&D 83-days ago suggests. Proved his stamina for the trip last time when doing is best work at the finish. The first time blinkers are applied today, and easier ground should suit him well.

Dundalk

7:00 – State Occasion – 5/2 @ Bet365 & Paddy Power – An improving filly since returned to 1m 2f comes into this Listed contest after handicap wins at Goodwood and York 35-days ago.  She produced a career best at York and is well worth her place in pattern company for the first time. Has twice won on the all-weather so no problem with the surface and although stall ten could be better she’s the pick.

7:30 – Roman Bull – 7/1 @ Paddy Power – Got off the mark at the 5th attempt when winning a Clonmel maiden 22-days ago. Looks fairly treated for handicap debut and first run on the synthetics. Shouldn’t have any issues with today’s slightly longer distance and has handy low in 4. Looks handicapped to go close if handling the surface.

Cheers

John

Thursday Selections – September 22nd 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Newmarket, Perth, and Pontefract.

Newmarket

4:10 – Open Champion – 2/1 @ Bet365 – Looked progressive when winning a 1m 4f Lingfield all-weather maiden two starts back. Likely found a valuable 3-year-old handicap at Haydock (1m 6f) last time a bit too hot at this stage of his career. He’s just had the four career starts so capable of more progress and the yard is in hot form.

Perth

2:10 – Haute Estime – 4/1 @ Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook – Faces three rivals on her chase debut in the Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase this afternoon. One of her rivals is useful hurdler Gowel Road who is also making his debut over the larger obstacles. However. I’m going to go with the mare, who improved for the step up to 3m when an 8 ½ length 3rd of 14 to Gelino Bello in the Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree in April. A big chasing type she should well over the larger obstacles this season. Might not be risked on drying ground though.

Pontefract

5:10 – Speedacus – 9/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes –The 3-year-old is having his first start for new trainer David O’Meara here. He produced a career best in the first time blinkers when winning at Navan 75-days ago. Up 6lb but Mark Winn takes off a handy 7lb. A good chance of going in again, albeit stall 8 isn’t ideal and the first time cheekpieces replace the blinkers.

Cheers

John

Wednesday Selections – September 21st 2022

Hi all,

A frustrating Tuesday with all three selections finishing runner-up in their respective races.  On another day they all go in. Today’s selections are from Goodwood, Perth, and Kempton.

Goodwood

4:10 – Secret Shadow – 2/1 @ Bet365 – A promising third over C&D in May she bounced back from a poor run at Haydock when getting up close home over C&D 25-days ago. Up 4lb for that win but comes into the autumn fresher than most and did win twice last October. The filly probably doesn’t want ground quicker than good but should go in again before the season is out.

Perth

2:45 – Bavington Bob – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Won four of his 6 starts over fences last season and looks the sort to make up into a good staying handicap chaser on his second season over the larger obstacles. Never travelling when 3rd of 7 at Haydock in April. However, he was likely in need of break at the time after a long season and the ground was quicker than the going description of good to soft. Tough race to win on seasonal return but he did win first time up last season and should be capable of defying a mark of 130 this season.

Kempton

5:45 – Banddar – 10/1 @ Bet365 – Needs respecting on his racecourse debut run when a promising 5th of 8 to Gimcrack winner Noble Style at Ascot in May. Very disappointing 9th of 10 at Haydock later that month. Has been gelded in the meantime and gets the first time hood for his return to action. Interesting that Danny Tudhope comes down for the ride and he’ll surely run a lot better than he did last time. Interesting to see how he fares in the pre-race betting.

Cheers

John

Tuesday Selections – September 20th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Beverley.

Beverley

1:42 – Berry Edge – 4/1 @ Bet365 – Won over C&D last year and was fair 1½ lengths third of 6 at Ripon last time. Interesting in the first time cheekpieces and has a handy draw in stall 1 for a prominent racer.

4:37 – Tollard Royal – 7/2 @ Bet365 – Made all to win here over 8 ½ f in the spring. Back to form effort when 3 lengths 6th of 13 at Chester last time. Was out wide that day and was doing his best work at the finish. A return to a stiffer track will suit and he’s handily drawn in stall 2.

5:10 – Motarajel – 8/1 @ Bet365 – A previous C&D winner who’s been at the first three only once on his seven runs at the track. The 5-year-old was a credible 2 ¼ length 4th of 8 at Ayr 5-days ago. Not the most reliable but he’s back down to his last winning mark and the return to Beverley means he’s got a chance.

Cheers

John

Sunday Selections – September 18th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Hamilton and Plumpton.

Hamilton

2:00 – Fox Hill – 4/1 @ Bet365 & Ladbrokes – Looked unlucky not to finish closer when length 4th of 14 at Redcar 5-days ago. The mare gets the first-time blinkers today and its worth noting she has won in the past when cheekpieces and the visor were first applied. The quick turnaround shouldn’t be a problem as she’s 4-5 when racing within 7-days of her previous start.

4:30 – Salve Japan – 15/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection has looked steadily progressive on her first three starts. Whilst I’m not sure how well handicapped she is, the step up 1m 3f on her handicap debut will hopefully prove ideal.

Pumpton

3:20 – Thibault – 100/30 @ Bet365 – Recent Stratford winner Sergeant looks a worthy market leader but I’m going to take him on with the selection. Two from two at Plumpton, albeit over 2m 4f, the 9-year-old got stuck in the mud in the Jump jockeys Derby at Epsom 10-days ago and will be happier back on a sound surface. Despite being 6lb above his last winning mark I expect him to go close at a venue he goes well at.

Cheers

John

Saturday Selections – September 17th 2022

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Ayr and Newmarket.

Ayr

1:55 – Phantom Flight – 5/4 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The 3-year-old been steadily progressive this season and last time put in a pattern level performance when storming clear to win a York handicap by five lengths. Well suited to a sound surface the drying ground is a plus for his chance and I will be disappointed if he can’t bridge the gap from handicaps and Listed company.

3:05 – Queen Me – 11/8 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – A winner at Haydock on her racecourse debut the filly took a big step forward when a neck 2nd of 13 to Swingalong in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York last month. There should be more to come from her going forward and its hard to see her being beaten if in the same form as last time.

4:15 – Have Secret – 6/1 @ Bet365 – Is more exposed than most of his rivals in this Class 3 nursery. He needed every yard of the 7f when getting up close to home at Haydock last time. The step up to a mile will suit and although he’s 8lb higher I liked his attitude at the finish last time and he should go close.

Newmarket

2:06 – Washraa – 3/1 @ Bet365 & Ladbrokes – Hopefully the selection can provide the inform Owen Burrows with another winner. The filly put in a career best on RPR’s when ½-length 3rd of 10 at Ascot 70-days ago.  The short break shouldn’t be an issue as she won her seasonal return at Wolverhampton in April. Up 3lb for her Ascot effort but Harry Davies takes off 3lb which negates her rise in the weights.

Cheers

John
