5:30 – Pessoa – 100/30 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection made a winning stable/all-weather debut over C&D 19-days ago. Slowly away that day and in the circumstances did well to win with a bit in hand. Up 5lb but capable of being competitive once more if he gets a decent pace to aim at.

Today’s selections are from Chepstow.

12:40 – Atlanta Brave – 2/1 @ Bet365 & Coral – An Irish point winner last year, he shaped with plenty encouragement on stable/hurdling debut when a ¾-length 2nd of 9 at Hereford 46-days ago. Keeping on nicely at the finish over 2m he should be well suited by the step up to the extended 2m 3f here.
3:40 – Pepe Le Moko – 4/1 @Bet365 & Coral – A useful 3rd of 12 in a Newton Abbot novice hurdle before a credible 6th of 19 at Cheltenham on handicap debut. The lightly raced 5-year-old was sent off the 5/2 favourite at Lingfield last time but didn’t get the race run to suit, outpaced on the home turn he shaped like he needed further than 2m that day.

Not surprisingly, given the amount of racing today I had no less than eight possible selections on my initial shortlist for Saturday’s racing. Well, I have cut them down to three which are from Newcastle and Sandown.
Newcastle
1:23 – Hidden Commander – 15/2 @ Bet365 – Has a good god strike rate over fences and made it 5-9 over the larger obstacles at Sedgefield last month. Up 4lb for a 2 length success isn’t harsh and he’s already won over C&D in November.
1:58 – Gentleman De Mai – 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Lightly raced the selection has shaped with promise on both starts since going handicapping. He shaped like more of a stamina test was required when a 2 length 3rd of 9 at Ayr (2m 4 ½ f) last time. He should be suited by today’s extended 2m 7f and remains capable of better.
Sandown
1:50 – Grey Diamond – 5/2 @ Bet365 – A winner over C&D in March 2021, off 5lb lower. No wins from three runs last year but would surely have won at Wincanton but for a bad mistake 12 months ago. Solid form when a 3¼ lengths 3rd of 8 at Cheltenham on his seasonal return in November. The two that finished in front of him that day have gone in again since.

Today’s selections are from Ludlow and Southwell.
Ludlow
3:00 – Ree Okka – 11/10 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – A promising 2 ¼ length 2nd of 4 to Doctor Ken on his Aintree chase debut could never got competitive at Exeter next time. He should be suited by the step up to 3m +, won at 3m over hurdles at Kempton last January. Hopefully he will be ridden from the front here and remains capable of better over fences.
Southwell
6:45 – Eligible – 15/8 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Made it 2-2 over C&D when coming from behind to win three weeks ago. Nudged up 5lb for that success but he had a bit in hand at the finish that day and should be up to defying his rise in the weights if gets the race run to suit once more.

Saint Segal did the business for the service at Hereford on Wednesday. Today’ I’m off to Ffos Las for today’s selections.
Ffos Las
2:00 – Brulure Noire – 3/1 @ Bet365 – Won a Limerick maiden hurdle on heavy ground last season for his previous yard so won’t be inconvenienced by testing ground. The 6-year-old made a winning chase debut here over 2m in November Steps up 5f in trip, but his hurdle win came over 2m 3f so there’s a good chance he’ll stay.
3:30 – Dentley De Mee – 7/4 @ Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook – A winner on heavy ground. Plenty of promise to be taken from his first start for 20 months also first start for Venetia Williams, when a ¾-length 2nd of 5 over C&D two months ago. Can race off the same mark here and the 10-year-old is a on competitive mark.

2:30 – Saint Segal – 7/4 @ Bet365 – A winning juvenile hurdler, the 5-year-old made a successful start to his chase career when comfortably seeing off 10 rivals at Chepstow (good to soft) 47-days ago. Two mile looks his distance, he should be fine on soft ground, and he can win more races in the sphere.

Today’s selections are from Ayr and Plumpton
Ayr
1:45 – Omar Maretti – 4/1 @ Bet365 – A winner of his first two starts over hurdles two seasons ago and two from four when going over fences last season. A disappointing effort when pulling up in the Kim Muir Chase (9/1) at the Cheltenham Festival. His jumping didn’t hold up in a big field that day. And a return to a smaller field and a flatter track should suit the 8-year-old. He’s gone well fresh in the past and is a contender.
Plumpton
2:30 – Tip Top Mountain – 7/4 @ Bet365 – The 8-year-old won twice over fences last season including this race off 10lb lower. Returned from a 9 month lay off to make all at Fontwell 50-days ago. A 6lb rise in the weights makes life tougher but he’s likely to get his own way out in front again and looks capable of following up if he does.

The end of what’s been a challenging 2022 and a truly dreadful December. The New Year can only be better. Can’t it?
Today’s selections are from Musselburgh, Exeter and Catterick.
Musselburgh
1:35 – Copper’s Cross – 3/1 @ Bet365 & Coral – Looked like a progressive handicap chaser when winning at Carlisle on his seasonal reappearance. Raised 8lb for that success he posted a career best on RPR’s when a 5 ½ length 3rd of 13 to Brave Seasca at Aintree last month. Remains on a competitive mark and another big run can be expected.
Exeter
2:40 – Lady KK – 3/1 @ Bet365 – A winning hurdler the selection has yet to win any of her four starts over fences but seems to have been given a chance by the handicapper and she shaped with promise back over the larger obstacles when a 14 length 2nd of 12 to Bangers And Cash on seasonal return over C&D 42-days ago.
Catterick
1:15 – Just Jess – 5/2 @ Bet365 – A winner of a Hexham maiden hurdle (heavy) last season. The mare has been given a chance by the handicapper and shaped much better stepped up markedly in trip when an encouraging 1 ½ length 3rd of 14 at Newcastle 45-days ago. Nudged up 2lb for her latest effort but remains on a competitive mark.

1:00 – School For Scandal – 11/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Remains a maiden after seven starts under rules but has finished runner-up om three of his four starts over fences. He produced a career best effort last time when an improved neck 2nd of 7 at Hereford 38-days ago. Up 4lb but can go close in a similar race here.
Uttoxeter
2:53 – Lydford Lad – 9/4 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – A winner over hurdles the 7-year-old returned from a 7 month break with a good 2 length 2nd of 7 at Ffos Las on stable/chase debut 36-days ago. Nudged up 2lb but shaped last time like he can win races in the sphere.
3:28 – Art Decco – 11/4 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – A five race maiden the 6-year-old produced a career best effort when a running on ¾ length 2nd off 11 (2m 5f) here 25-days ago. Up 4lb for his latest effort but the step up to 3m can hopefully elicit more improvement in the 6-year-old. Capable of winning races over fences.
