Sunday Selections – August 2nd 2020

Hi all,

Just the one selection today from Leicester.

Leicester

1:35 – Soft Whisper – 13/8 @ Bet365 & Coral – Made a very promising racecourse debut at Salisbury 22-days ago. The daughter of Dubawi was inexperienced in the early stages of that race but once the penny dropped she was running on well to grab second on the line. Looks more than capable of winning a race like this.

Cheers

Saturday Selections – August 1st 2020

Hi all,

It’s either up or down for the service at present. Two winners on Friday, meant we finished the day firmly on the up.

Saturday’s selections are from Newmarket and Goodwood.

Newmarket

12:55 – Balgair – 7/1 @ Bet365 – A previous C&D winner. The 6-year-old has dropped to 2lb below his last winning mark and hasn’t been disgraced on either start this season at Yarmouth. Vulnerable to any improvers in the field but he’s suited by quick ground and is handicapped to go close on his best form.

1:30 – Casual Reply – 5/1 @ Bet365 – Could never land a blow on what looked an inadequate 1m on her seasonal return at Newbury two weeks ago and the step up to 1m 2f should be more to her liking. A four-race maiden but she’s only had the four career starts and shapes like she can win a handicap like this.

Goodwood

4:40 – Longlai – 8/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Shaped with encouragement when 2nd of 4 (5/2) at Newmarket on his racecourse debut 49-day ago and looks the sort to improve with racing which he needs to do to win this maiden.  Trainer Richard Hannon has a good record with his second time out juveniles that were sent off 4/1 & under on their racecourse debut – 29 winners from 98 runners 30% +66.13 54 placed 55% and 3 winners from 5 runners 60% +3.58 with such qualifiers at Goodwood.

Cheers

Friday Selections – 31st July 2020

Hi all,

Goodwood

1:10 – Cepheus – 13/2 @ Paddy Power – The selection is steadily improving with racing. A promising 6th of 14 on his handicap/seasonal debut at Royal Ascot. He built on that promise when runner-up at Kempton 16-days ago. Has been raised 3lb for that effort but he’s capable of more improvement and has solid claims here.

Pontefract

3:25 – Squelch – 9/4 @Bet365 – Improved to dead heat at Wolverhampton on her seasonal return and then progressed further when winning at Doncaster 31-days ago. Nudged up 3lb for that success but looks like she remains on a competitive mark.

Lingfield

7:25 – Prince Rock – 7/2 @ Bet365 – Twice a course winner over 7f and was only beaten a short head here back in June. Wasn’t helped by a slow start when 3rd of 10 when last seen in action at Chelmsford 44-days ago. Needs a strong pace to chase and if he gets it won’t be far away with Adam Kirby booked for the ride.

Cheers

Thursday Selections – July 30th 2020

Hi all,

It’s a bit of a rollercoaster for the service at present but a couple of winners on Wednesday offsets the previous two day’s losses.

Today’s selections are from Goodwood and Galway.

Goodwood

3:15 – Nazeef – 11/4 @Bet365 – Has won her last six starts over the past 12 months. Moving from handicap company, to winning the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge at Royal Ascot and last time out making a winning step up into Group 1 company in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. First run over 1m 2f but should stay and could improve again. Must give to 9lb to French Oaks winner Fancy Blue but will be suited by a likely tactical race.

4:55 – Different Face – 9/1 @ Bet365 – Winter Power will take some stopping under her penalty. However, the selection can take advantage should the hot favourite run below par. The daughter of Exceed And Excel wasn’t disgraced when runner-up to Yazaman on her racecourse debut and built on that promise when showing good speed when making all to win at Lingfield 33-days ago. Nursery debut on a speed favouring track looks ideal for a filly from an inform yard.

Galway

7:45 – Tune The Chello – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Had shaped with promise in mares only maiden hurdle races last winter and returned from a 159-day break to make all. over 2m 7f, at Killarney 23-days ago. It was stamina that won her the day last time and today’s extra furlong will suit the mare on her handicap debut. The runner-up has since gone onto win so the form looks solid enough. Granted the Henry De Bromhead stable could be in better just the 1 winner from 37 runners 3% in the past 14-days but she will do for me.

Cheers

Wednesday Selections – July 29th 2020

Hi all,

Today’s selections are from Goodwood and Thirsk.

Goodwood

2:15 – Win O’Clock -5/1 @ Coral – A winner at Haydock, finished 7th of 17 in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot. Dropped back to 1m 2f posed no problem for the son of Australia, as beat two rivals at Leicester in Class 4 company. Up 4lb in a better race but he’s progressive and should run well.

2:45 – Steel Bull – 7/2 @ Bet365 & Ladbrokes – The Irish raider created a very favourable impression when winning a maiden auction at Naas just 7-days ago. Knew his job that day and looks a useful juvenile. Interesting that connections turn him out quickly for this and I think he can close with normal improvement.

Thirsk

6:00 – Queen’s Sargent – 11/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Has returned in good form since a winter wind-op. After placed efforts at Newcastle and here. The 5-year-old was well suited by the strong gallop when getting up in the shadow of the post to score at Beverley 12-days ago.  Up 4lb but Meghan Nicholls takes off 3lb which helps negates the weight rise. In a deeper race here but is inform and should remain competitive if he gets the race run to suit.

Cheers

Tuesday Selections – July 28th 2020

Hi all,

Five days of high-class action begins on the South Downs with the start of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.  I have selections from Goodwood, Galway & Yarmouth.

Goodwood

1:10 – Angel Power – 7/2 @ Bet365 & Ladbrokes – Has improved with each of her three career starts. A winner at Chelmsford on her seasonal return she improved further for the step up into handicap company when 2nd of 9, beaten a neck at Haydock last month. Up 5lb but is unexposed and there are more races to be won with her.

Galway

8:15 – Eight And Bob – 11/2 @ Bet365 – Finished runner-up in this race last year off 2lb lower. Disappointed on his last two starts over hurdles at the end of 2019 and so there has be a slight question mark over the 7-year-old’s well-being but Rachael Blackmore has been booked for the ride and this has probably been the target. Trainer Willie Mullins has an exceptional record at the track in 3-yo+ flat races – 13 winners from 27 runners 48% +41.51 17 placed 63% since the start of 2015.

Yarmouth

6:00 – Pentland Lad – 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Put in a career best on turf when winning here over C&D 29-days ago. Up 4lb but remains on a competitive mark and if the going remains on the quick side of good he’s got a great chance of following up.

Cheers

John

Monday Selections – July 27th 2020

Hi all,

Monsieur Lambrays kept the winning run going at York yesterday. Today looks tougher, as the going at Windsor has now eased too good to soft and more showers are forecast.

Windsor

7:30 – Burano Boy – 8/1 @ Bet365 – Has just had the four career starts and not for the first time shaped with encouragement when a staying on 4th of 10 on his handicap debut at Yarmouth (good to firm) 12-days ago. Today’s extra 1 ½ furlongs should be in his favour and his pedigree gives hope that he can be effective on rain softened ground.

8:30 – Derek Le Grand – 13/2 @ Bet365 – Put in a career best effort when 2nd of 13 here 14-days ago. That was on good to firm ground so today’s going will be a bit of an unknown. Raced last time like today’s longer trip will suit and he remains on a competitive looking mark despite a 2lb rise in the weights.

Cheers

John

Sunday Selections – July 26th 2020

Hi all,

Thankfully Star Cactus (7/1) saved the day by winning the Ascot nursery yesterday. To give the service a tidy profit.

Today’s selections run at Ascot & York

Ascot

3:05 – Billesdon Brook – 11/4 @ Paddy Power – Is the class horse of this Group 3 contest. A dual Group 1 winner, the 1000 Guineas and last year’s Sun Chariot Stakes.  The 5-year-old showed she remains in good heart when finishing a neck second in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes. Needs a strongly run mile to be seen at her best but a reproduction of her Falmouth run would be good enough here.

4:15 – Campari – 7/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Looked to have benefitted from a winter gelding operation when making all to win at Chepstow on his seasonal return last month. The 3-year-old improved on that performance when beaten a nose on his handicap debut at Sandown three weeks ago.  Up 3lb but there’s should be more improvement to come. Ryan Moore has been booked and he and trainer Roger Charlton combined for a big race winner here on Saturday.

York

3:55 – Monsieur Lambrays – 100/30 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The 4-year-old looks to be improving with racing. He returned to action with a neck 2nd of 11 at Pontefract last month before going one better when putting a career best effort to beat nine rivals at Salisbury, when stepping up to 1m 6f for the first time. Up 2lb but raced last time like a step up to 2m will suit and he can defy his weight rise.

Cheers

John

Saturday Selections – July 25th 2020

Hi all,

The Racing Post was down earlier which means I’m playing catch up this morning.

Ascot

1:50 – Naval Crown – 4/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Made a promising racecourse debut when 3rd of 9 at Newmarket 15-days ago. There should be plenty of improvement to come from the colt but there will need to be as he steps up into Listed company here. Trainer Charlie Appleby won this race 12 months ago and has his horses in great form 9 winners from 24 runners 38% in the past 14-days.

4:45 – Star Cactus – 7/1 @ Bet365 & Ladbrokes – Was fancied on her racecourse debut when 4th of 9 at Newmarket last month and proved she stayed 7f when finishing runner-up at the same venue 35-days ago. Capable of better on her nursery debut for an inform yard.

York

3:15 – Orbaan – 7/2 @ Bet365 – No show on his first start for trainer David O’Meara at Newmarket last month but bounced back to form with a C&D win 16-days ago. Handicapper has raised the 5-year-old 4lb for that win which doesn’t look insurmountable given his liking for the track. Seemed to enjoy the easier surface last time but if not inconvenienced by a sounder surface is the one to beat.

Cheers

John

Friday Selections – July 24th 2020

Hi all,

Three selections today from Beverley & Ripon.

Beverley

2:25 – Le Chiffre – 15/8 @ Bet365 – The 3-year-old has returned to action in great form with wins here over 7 ½ f and when stepping up to 1m ½ f at Hamilton 21-days ago. Up 7lb but going the right way and has a handy low draw. Will be hard to stop in his hat trick bid.

Ripon

6:25 – Muscika – The selection is on a long losing run of 16 that dates back to May 2019 off today’s mark. Showed he wasn’t far off his best when a ¾ length 2nd of 18 at York 6-days ago. Yet to notch a win here from four attempts but has placed twice. Suited by an easy 6f and if the first-time blinkers replace the visor and if the headgear change has the desired effect can break his long losing run.

7:25 – Dubai Future – 4/1 @ Bet365 & Paddy Power – The top-weight takes a slight drop-in class here after his 6th of 13 to Cape Coast at Newmarket last week. Didn’t seem to stay the 1m 6f on soft ground but was still bang there a furlong out. Just the eight career starts so is open to a shade more improvement and gets the first time cheekpieces today for the drop back to 1m 4f.

Cheers

John
