Monday Selections – February 1st 2021

Hi all,

Sepahi blew the start yesterday and that was her chance gone. Today’s four selections are from Dundalk and Wolverhampton.

Dundalk

3:10 – Stay With Me – 100/30 – Gen – Made all to win over C&D three weeks ago. The mare wasn’t winning out of turn and interestingly connections opt for the first time cheekpieces today. Hopefully the application of the first-time headgear ekes out the bit of improvement needed for the selection to follow up.

3:40 – Wave Walker – 11/1 @ Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook – Bounced back to form when runner up to Stay With Me over C&D three weeks ago. That was the selections first start for his present yard and he’s capable of winning off his present mark.

5:25 – Gatsby Cap – 100/30 – Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook – Shaped with encouragement when a running on 4th of 14 here 21-days ago. That was the 5-year-old’s first start for his new yard and his first run for 134-days. Twice a winner over a mile in the past he gets the first time cheekpieces for the drop back to 7f.

Wolverhampton

7:10 – Red Poppy – 5/2 – Gen – Made a winning start for Charlie Fellowes at Newcastle two starts back. The lightly raced filly couldn’t follow that up when only third over C&D last month but she was beaten less than a length that day and has been dropped 1lb in the weights. The first time cheekpieces are applied and if the headgear has the desired effect she won’t be far away again.

Cheers

Sunday Selections – January 31st 2021

Hi all,

Catterick is off so today’s sole selection is from the “lucky last” at Wolverhampton.

Wolverhampton

4:10 – Sepahi – 3/1 – Gen – Twice a winner here, including C&D, the 5-year-old shaped like she may be about to winning form when 4th of 8 at Kempton 4-days ago. Back down to her last winning mark, the first-time visor replaces the blinkers the mare wore last time. Interestingly two of her previous five career wins came when wearing first time headgear.

Cheers

John

Saturday Selections – January 30th 2021

Hi all,

Crimewave got a great ride from Laura Pearson to win at Lingfield yesterday. Just the two selections today from Doncaster & Lingfield.

Doncaster

3:50 – Financial Outcome – 11/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The Rebecca Curtis trained 8-year-old improved to win over 3m 2f here, off 7lb lower 12 months ago. Probably needed the run after a recent wind-op when an encouraging 3rd of 10 at Bangor 16-days ago.  He’s on a competitive mark if returning to last season’s best form from which came on slow ground.

Lingfield

3:30 – Masked Identity – 11/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Looks to be back down to a winnable mark. Arguably was unlucky not win when a close-up 3rd of 10 at Chelmsford 16-days ago. Despite a slight concern about the lack of early pace in the race I still like the selections claims here.

Cheers

Friday Selections – January 29th 2021

Hi all,

Bobby Joe Leg got the service back in the winners at Newcastle last evening. Today’s selections are from Doncaster, Lingfield and Dundalk.

Doncaster

1:00 – Le Grand Fromage – 7/2 @ Bet365 – Kept on well from off the pace to finish runner-up on his chase debut at Newcastle last month. Step up to 2m 3f looks a positive and the 6-year-old gets the first time cheekpieces today. Looks on a workable mark and can gain an overdue first career win.

Lingfield

2:55 – Crimewave – 4/1 – Gen – Won twice over C&D in the early part of 2020 and finished a close-up third in this race 12 months ago. Placed on his last three starts and remains 3lb above his last winning mark but Laura Pearson takes off a handy 5lb and the 5-year-old won’t be far away again.

Dundalk

5:00 – Sideshow Bob – 7/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Has been knocking on the doorin mile handicap here on her last three starts. Likes to come off a strong gallop, which she didn’t get last time, and the booking of a top 5lb apprentice and first-time hood can enable the 5-year-old to gain her first win, on just her ninth career start.

Cheers

Thursday Selections – January 28th 2021

Hi all,

No joy with yesterday’s selection at Kempton.  Now Wetherby is off, today’s selections are from Gowran Park, Meydan & Newcastle.

Gowran Park

2:20 – Great White Shark – 5/2 @ Bet365 & Paddy Power –  Won a valuable 2m 7f handicap hurdle at the Galway Festival and then went onto win Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket. Very effective on soft ground but winter heavy does ask a different question of the mare. Looks the one to beat here.

Meydan

5:25 – Key Victory – 15/2 @ William Hill – Won this race first time up 12 months ago, off 2lb lower, and returns from a similar lay off here. Vulnerable to any better handicapped horses but shouldn’t be far away.

Newcastle

7:00 – Bobby Joe Leg – 4/1 – Gen – All five career wins have come on the tapeta including two over C&D. Comes into today’s race in good form having finished a head second here 7-days ago. Races off the same mark and can go one better.

Cheers

Wednesday Selections – January 27th 2021

Hi all,

Horn Of Plenty came from behind to win at Wolverhampton yesterday. Not much catches the eye today. Just the one selection from Kempton.

Kempton

8:20 – Villanelle – 11/2 @ Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook – The selection is a ten-race maiden but has shown enough to think she can win a race off her present mark. Ran well when 4th of 11 at Lingfield last month. That was the filly’s first run beyond 1m 4f and she’s worth another try over this distance. Looks to have a decent chance in open looking handicap.

Cheers

Tuesday Selections – January 26th 2021

Hi all,

Wolverhampton

4:10 – Horn Of Plenty – 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Won over C&D three starts back and ran just as well in defeat when 4th of 9 at Lingfield 17-days ago. Arguably the filly could have finished closer last time as she didn’t get the bets of passages twice in the straight.

5:10 – Gold Ribbon – 11/2 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selection was 0-4 with Mark Johnson but she shaped encouragingly for new connections when 4th of 10 here 20-days ago. That was over an extended mile and today’s extra furlong should suit the filly who hails from an inform yard.

Cheers

John

Sunday Selections – January 24th 2021

Hi all,

I’m off tomorrow so hopefully will sign off with a winner today. Two of today’s selections were from Hereford which is now off due to heavy snow. That leaves just Lingfield.

Lingfield

1:40 – Pirate King– 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – The selections form figures over C&D are 1112. That latter second placed effort was a career best on RPR’s for the 6-year-old and he looks to have a good chance of going one better here.

3:40 – The Hulk – 3/1 @ William Hill – Posted a good effort to win on his racecourse debut over C&D 12-days ago. Has a 7lb penalty to carry for that success which makes life tougher but he looks useful and is open to more improvement.

Cheers

John

Saturday Selections – January 23rd 2021

Hi all,

Bobby K kept the winning run going at Dundalk yesterday. Today’s selections are from Ascot and Haydock.

Ascot

2:25 – De Forgotten One – 5/1 @ William Hill – The 7-year-old had no trouble in seeing off six rivals back over regulation fences at Catterick 20-days ago. Now 3-8 over fences. He’s been raised 10lb for his last win but remains open to further improvement. Not likely to get an easy lead this time but capable of going close.

Haydock

2:05 – Hijack – 3/1 @ Bet365 & Ladbrokes – Showed he goes well in the mud when a close-up 3rd of9 here over 2m 3f. Can race off the same mark and although he’s yet to prove he stays an extended 3m he shapes like he will and has a good chance of his third win over hurdles.

3:50 – Reivers Lad – 9/2 @ Ladbrokes & Paddy Power – A three-time winner on heavy over hurdles. He hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since winning on his chase debut at Newcastle 772-days ago. Clearly the 10-year-old hasn’t been the easiest to keep sound, as that Newcastle win came off 614-day layoff. Looks on a good mark for his handicap chase debut and first time up would look the time to catch him if he has retained most of his old ability.

Cheers

John
