Not surprisingly, given the amount of racing today I had no less than eight possible selections on my initial shortlist for Saturday’s racing. Well, I have cut them down to three which are from Newcastle and Sandown.
Newcastle
1:23 – Hidden Commander – 15/2 @ Bet365 – Has a good god strike rate over fences and made it 5-9 over the larger obstacles at Sedgefield last month. Up 4lb for a 2 length success isn’t harsh and he’s already won over C&D in November.
1:58 – Gentleman De Mai – 3/1 @ Coral & Ladbrokes – Lightly raced the selection has shaped with promise on both starts since going handicapping. He shaped like more of a stamina test was required when a 2 length 3rd of 9 at Ayr (2m 4 ½ f) last time. He should be suited by today’s extended 2m 7f and remains capable of better.
Sandown
1:50 – Grey Diamond – 5/2 @ Bet365 – A winner over C&D in March 2021, off 5lb lower. No wins from three runs last year but would surely have won at Wincanton but for a bad mistake 12 months ago. Solid form when a 3¼ lengths 3rd of 8 at Cheltenham on his seasonal return in November. The two that finished in front of him that day have gone in again since.
